This is How Our Friendship Ended
It must be nice to hold on to wrong so securely that you can fit it over anyone’s face.
The end of us started with a movie that I liked. I went to see The Hate U Give, and I was so moved by it that I posted something on my Facebook page. It just happened to be the same day as a different national tragedy, one closer to home for you. You decided that I had turned my back on you and everyone like you, so you posted something cruel on my page.
I reached out and we tried to talk it out. You even apologized, something I never thought I would see in this life. But when I would not back down, when I would not agree that I was a bad friend and a bad person for not commenting on something I didn’t even know about, you were done. Within minutes, both of us gone from each other’s contacts and Facebook pages.
Still, that’s not quite it. The end of us started with the beginning of us. In the book where you believe everything is written, the end of us was written well before either of us was ever born. I met you when I was fragile and reckless. You saw someone you could take advantage of and overpower, but to your surprise you started to care about me.
