My First Midlife Bra Fitting

I am nearly 50 years old and, until today, I have never had a proper professional bra fitting. My general goal in life has been to construct my life in a way where I either don’t have to wear a bra (highly preferred), or I can wear a comfortable sports bra (because running braless just doesn’t feel entirely safe.)

Recently, though, I have been discovering how delightful it is to have and live in this body (more on that in future writing), and it followed that it is becoming more delightful to adorn this body with care and attention.

I used to study and sometimes perform dance. At the time, I fell a little bit in love with costuming and adornment. There was nothing quite like the feeling of putting on the heavy necklaces and the cuff bracelet that went from wrist to elbow, along with some kind of skirt that makes echoes of my movement and a top that shines under lights.

When I moved away from Chicago, I struggled to find teachers and a community and so dancing became something I did in private. Usually in something like pajamas. All my glittering, sparkling things went into the back of my closets, and I stopped dressing for joy. Just as I stopped living joyfully in my body.

Now, though, I am living joyfully in my body again. I don’t want to dance on a stage anymore, but I do want to dress to delight myself, and perhaps…
