The author being very much in the present

Last year, my annual end-of-year retreat was a 3-day dance meditation held over Zoom. At the time, I was still mostly okay with the isolation, just starting to touch the edges of despair and loneliness. I was astonished at how connected I felt with the tiny screen people over those three days.

In the way of many such retreats, the organizers asked us all to write a letter to ourselves and email it to them. The letter was to be returned to us at some random future date. I got mine back today.

There is a bit of magic in writing things down. It is a power that I know I have taken for granted, and even misused at times. I was reminded of all of this when I got back my letter, and damn if it didn’t say some things I needed to hear.

Maybe you do too, so I’m sharing it below.

Dear Rebecca,
I want you to remember the way your feet feel after you’ve been dancing for three days straight. I want you to remember the soreness in your body and the utter helium lightness of your heart. I want you to remember movement and nourishment, how you fed your body with time for yourself, with tasty food, with movement and enough sleep. Remember your vision for Crone School and don’t put that aside because of fear that you don’t know enough to do it. Teaching is learning and you are ready for both. I want you to…
